Tai chi chuan and qi gong offer practitioners a balanced martial art and a means of healthy exercise. Qi gong, or breathing exercises, provide a stable foundation and flow of chi. Chi, the spiritual energy of the body, flows only when you exercise proper breathing techniques. Tai chi uses the flow of chi in harmony with physical movements to neutralize an attack without using force of your own.
Qi Gong Breathing Method
Chinese martial arts such as tai chi chuan rely on stability of the whole body as well as technical skills for their effectiveness. Qi gong serves as a useful foundation. It requires a different method of breathing from what you likely use. Most people breathe shallowly, constricting the throat. In doing this, you limit the flow of air into your lungs and diaphragm. Also, tension of the throat and chest causes the center of gravity to move into the upper body. The higher your center of gravity is, the more unbalanced you become. To avert this, relax your muscles and breathe into your diaphragm. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Qi gong meditation exercises involve a relaxed stance, as does tai chi. To best use qi gong, schedule 20 minutes when you won't be disturbed daily.
Tai Chi Chuan Basics
Tai chi chuan traces its roots to the Taoist principles of yin and yang, soft and hard. In the context of martial arts, soft and hard denote the style of movement. Soft styles such as tai chi rely on internal energy, circular motions and redirection of force. Hard styles, such as karate, rely on external energy, linear motions and direct opposition of force. Keep your muscles relaxed when you perform tai chi movements; this allows your body to flow with the movements. Tense your musclesonly when striking at just before impact.
Wu Chi Stance and Principles
The wu chi stance in tai chi chuan forms the basis of all movement. To take the wu chi stance, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees. Relax your upper body, and let your arms hang by your sides. Hold your head and neck straight. You should feel like you're hanging from a string with your feet planted firmly on the ground. Avoid locking your knees, because tai chi requires easy movement from the hips and lower body, according to Gilman Studio.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers disability benefits, including medical coverage and income, to individuals that become disabled as a result of military service. Medicaid provides health coverage for low-income pregnant women, children, the elderly and disabled.
Time Frame
If you receive a letter stating that your VA benefits or Medicaid have been discontinued, you must submit an appeal letter within a certain time frame. It is recommended that the appeal request is submitted to your local office within 10 days of the date on the letter.
Warning
One of the most common reasons for losing benefits is failure to comply with submitting paperwork or attending necessary recertification appointments. Ensure that your address and phone number are up to date and keep track of any upcoming appointments and/or documentation that must be submitted.
Significance
For many disabled veterans, the only source of income and health coverage is through the VA. Many low-income individuals only have Medicaid as their insurance coverage. The appeals and reinstatement process can be lengthy and result in significant financial stress.
Reinstatement
The process of reinstating VA benefits or Medicaid coverage may be handled by contacting a caseworker who turns the benefits back on, the case may be reviewed by a disability specialist or an administrative law judge or you may have to attend a court hearing. The process is largely determined by the reason for losing benefits and the time frame between losing benefits and filing an appeal for reinstatement.
Representation
You have the right to representation during the reinstatement process. This can be a friend or family member, an entitlement specialist from a mental health agency or another agency or an attorney.

Acupuncture needles inserted into a client's stomach.
Both massage and acupuncture come from ancient China. They have been part of Eastern medicine for thousands of years, according to Christian Nordquvist of Medical News Today and Temma Ehrenfeld of Newsweek. Message involves rubbing and pressing against parts of the body. Acupuncture involves puncturing the skin with needles to realign body energies. These techniques have similar benefits and uses.
Immunity
Both acupuncture and massage impact the immune system according to Ehrenfeld, the Mayo Clinic and American Acupuncture. Ehrenfeld asserts that massage reduces the level of the stress hormone cortisol that damages and kills immune system cells. Additionally, American Acupuncture claims the immune system and the nervous system are linked. When the body feels pain, or when pain is taken away, the nervous system responds either positively or negatively by stimulating the release of other chemicals. When a person relaxes or pain is diverted through massage or acupuncture, stress hormones decrease while pleasure hormones increase, giving the immune system a boost.
Pain Relief
Acupuncture and massage may be useful for relieving pain in a large number of conditions ranging anywhere from a sprained ankle to headaches or asthma. Since, as explained by American Acupuncture, the immune system and the nervous system are intertwined, when the immune system attacks invaders, the result is inflammation and pain. By boosting the immune system, massage and acupuncture reduce this inflammation and discomfort. The Mayo Clinic reports that professionals already use massage to relieve pain and stiffness with good clinical results. For this reason, some insurance companies now cover alternative therapies like acupuncture and massage, and more Western doctors are accepting these Eastern methods as viable medical techniques.
Hormonal Conditions
Both acupuncture and massage impact hormone levels in the body by reducing stress. Since hormones in the body are very intricately tied together, people may use massage and acupuncture to manage conditions impacted by hormones such as menstrual cramps, blood pressure, insomnia, infertility and digestive problems, according to Nordqvist, Acupuncture Treatment and Ehrenfeld. Since hormones also control mood and behavior to a large degree, the Mayo Clinic postulates that massage and acupuncture may be effective treatments for disorders such as depression or anxiety.

The kidneys are responsible for processing excess fluid, waste and minerals from the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic. The kidneys can build up an excess of these minerals, which leads to the formation of kidney stones. Your kidneys are also susceptible to toxic injury from a variety of substances that can cause damage and reduce the kidneys' ability to function, according to the Mayo Clinic. The ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda has developed several herbal formulas designed to protect and cleanse the kidneys.
Cystone
The herbal formulation Cystone is made of nine different Ayurvedic herbs and is specifically formulated to dissolve kidney stones and protect the kidneys. A study published in the journal "Phytotherapy Research" in 1998 found that a liquid syrup preparation of Cystone was able to reduce the calcium and oxalate levels in the kidneys of patients who were given a formula designed to increase these levels. Calcium and oxalate are major components in the formation of kidney stones. Another study, published in "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" in August 1998, found that Cystone was able to significantly protect rats against kidney toxicity that was induced by the researchers through a chemical called cisplatin. Cystone comes in both tablet and syrup formulations and can be found in health food stores, online and in many Indian grocery stores. Make sure to check with your doctor about possible drug/herb interactions if you are on pharmaceutical medications before beginning any herbal protocol.
Mutrakrichantak Churna
Mutrakrichantak Churna is another traditional herbal combination that is used for general kidney health, such as liver cleansing and for dissolving kidney stones. Mutrakrichantak Churna can made of several different herbs but is always based on the herb Salacia oblonga, or Trin Panch Mool. In a study published in the journal "Evidence based Complimentary and Alternative Medicine" in August 2009, researchers found that Salacia oblonga was able to inhibit the enzymes responsible for forming kidney fibrosis. Kidney fibrosis is one of the final stages of kidney disease and is followed closely by kidney dysfunction and failure. Mutrakrichantak Churna is usually available as a powder that can be consumed on a daily basis for an Ayurvedic kidney cleanse, and is to be found at most Indian grocery stores as well as on the Internet.

A large, yellow citrine doubles as a whimsical tortoise's shell.
Yellow gems range from the palest champagne hue to a vivid orange-tinged gold. Their warm colors hold the same appeal today as they did to ancient Celts and Egyptians, both of whom prized sunny yellow gemstones. While some yellow gemstones are colorful variants of precious stones, others are affordable semi-precious gems.
Citrine
A well-cut citrine shows its warm color.
Gemologists and jewelers refer to any quartz with a yellow hue as citrine. The stone gets its name from its citrus-like range of colors. This inexpensive gemstone varies in hue from pale lemon yellow to a sunny yellowish-orange. Stones with more saturated, intense color fetch higher prices. Like other quartz stones, citrine holds up well to wear; it's a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Although it superficially resembles yellow topaz, citrine has a low refractive index. Its glassy luster lacks topaz's fire, but it costs considerably less than its rarer lookalike.
Canary Diamond
Diamonds naturally range in color.
Colorless diamonds fit most people's conceptions of the gem, but not all diamonds are white. While diamonds with a noticeable champagne tinge lose some value, stones with a true vivid yellow color command higher prices than all but the clearest white diamonds. Canary diamonds have all of a white diamond's characteristic fire, but in a brilliant yellow to yellowish-brown gem. The element nitrogen gives a canary diamond its color, but the gems are as durable as white diamonds. Both are a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.
Yellow Sapphire
Durable corundum gems naturally occur in every color. If they're red, gemologists call them rubies; if they're any other hue, they're a form of sapphire. Yellow sapphires contain chromium and beryllium that tint them a true yellow or greenish-yellow. A rare, but prized, variation on yellow sapphire is the padparadscha sapphire which blends pink and yellow to produce a golden peach shade. Like other sapphire colors, yellow sapphires sometimes contain "silk," small directional inclusions that give the stone a velvety appearance.
Topaz
Topaz comes in many colors.
Although fashion jewelry has featured blue topaz for the past few decades, yellow topaz is the more valuable variety. Its color range overlaps citrine's, but topaz is a harder, heavier and more brilliant gem. Honey-colored yellow topaz also bears the name imperial topaz to differentiate it from blue varieties that are frequently irradiated and heat-treated.
Heliodor
Heliodor is the yellow member of the extensive beryl family of gems. It has the same chemical structure as emerald, morganite and aquamarine, but with iron and uranium impurities. The gem's name comes from Greek and roughly translates to "gift from the sun." Its sunny color can be anything from a springlike greenish yellow to an autumnal golden brown.
Amber
Amber remains a popular gemstone today.
One of the earliest gemstones known to man, amber is both a semi-precious stone and a relic of eons past. Unlike mineral gems, amber comes from an organic source; amber is fossilized tree resin from millions of years ago. Because of its rich yellow hue and its natural warmth -- amber is never cold to the touch -- the ancient Greeks called the stone elektron and associated it with the god of the sun who also bore the title Elektor, or "Awakener." Amber softens in heat and can even burn, giving off a warm resinous scent that made it a popular ingredient in incense.

Braces are often applied to teeth in order to fix cosmetic problems, but may also be used to alleviate conditions that cause pain, such as crowding. Braces themselves, especially if not taken care of properly, can cause painful conditions in the mouth. It is important to take measures to prevent toothache and pain from braces.
Instructions
1. See your orthodontist regularly. This is the best way to prevent braces from posing problems for you. The orthodontist will examine your braces and teeth for any problems so they can be taken care of promptly.
2. Check your mouth closely for loose or broken braces or brackets. Schedule a visit with your orthodontist if you find one so he can take care of it before it can cause further problems.
3. Examine the wires that connect your braces. If you have any wire sticking out, cover it with wax so it will be less likely to cause mouth pain. If the wire is completely out of the tube or slot, you may be able to gently place it back in with your fingers.
4. Rinse your mouth often with warm salt water, especially after first getting your braces or after having them tightened. The salt water will relieve any tooth pain with its warmth, and salt is a natural healing agent.
5. Invest in a mouth guard to protect your braces if you play sports. Ask your orthodontist for a recommendation of what kind to purchase.
6. Brush and floss your teeth as directed when you have braces. The orthodontics office will likely provide you with the correct equipment to use and instruct you on brushing and flossing while you are wearing braces.
7. Eat non-sticky foods to avoid having braces toothaches. Stay away from candies and hard foods. Eat only soft foods for the first few days after getting braces and for a day or so after every tightening.

Snoring can have a serious, negative effect on your life. It can take a toll on your relationship if you share a bed with your significant other. It can also affect your health, as snorers often don't sleep soundly. Although there are many treatments available to discourage snoring, surgery is one of the most effective means. As with any surgery, there are significant risks involved, so it's important to discuss these with your doctor.
Instructions
1. See a surgeon who specializes in snoring surgeries. Generally, otolaryngologists, more commonly known as ear, nose and throat doctors, specialize in such surgeries. Maxillofacial and oral surgeons also commonly perform surgeries that treat snoring.
2. Discuss an uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, also known as UPPP, with your surgeon. With this surgery, part of your palate or uvula will be removed. In some individuals, the tonsils are also removed during an UPPP. By removing these areas, your airway will be wider, resulting in less snoring. This surgery involves significant postoperative pain, and full recovery takes up to four weeks.
3. Talk to your surgeon about somnoplasty, also known as radio-frequency ablation. This procedure is the least-invasive surgical procedure to stop snoring. Energy from a needle electrode is used to shrink excess tissue in the nose and mouth areas, allowing you to breathe more easily while you sleep, thereby decreasing snoring.
4. Consider laser-assisted uvuloplatoplasty, also known as LAUP. In this procedure, a laser is used to remove part of the uvula and soft palate, creating a wider breathing airway. Generally, several laser treatment sessions are necessary to effectively stop snoring. This method works best for light to moderate snorers, as it may not be successful on heavy snorers.
5. Try a palatal stiffening operation, also known as CAPSO. During this surgery, an electrical cautery is pushed into your soft palate. The cautery burns a portion of the soft palate away to create a larger airway. Generally, CAPSO is an outpatient procedure.

Urinary tract infections are more common for little girls than for little boys. Understanding the different treatment options for a urinary tract infection can help parents make an informed decision. New research in the effectiveness of urinary tract infection treatment protocol gives insight to treatment protocol for families and doctors. Learning to prevent future urinary infections can help create healthy habits for life.
Symptoms
Painful urination is generally the first symptom of a UTI. Children may shriek or scream in pain while urinating and will often refuse to urinate. Refusal to urinate may prevent the pain of a UTI but can lead to worse problems down the road, such as bladder infections. Cloudy urine, bed wetting, inability to eat, low grade fever, vomiting and diarrhea can also be symptoms.
Causes
UTIs are generally caused by bacterial infections. For little girls, accidentally wiping feces into the vagina can cause a UTI. For boys, forcible retraction of the foreskin can cause a UTI. For all children, overexposure to bubble baths and other soaps in the genital area can cause UTIs by washing away the helpful bacteria that is supposed to populate the region. While treating a UTI, be sure to practice proper hygiene, including keeping the area reasonably clean without using soap. Clean water baths followed by a nice warm rinse are just fine for cleaning children's bodies. If you opt to use soap in the bath water, be sure to rinse children thoroughly with fresh running water before leaving the tub.
Treating with Medications
Antibiotics are often used to help rid children's bodies of infection-causing bacteria. Be sure to have children drink plenty of water while they're taking antibiotics. Recently, doctors have begun to use a shorter duration of antibiotics to prevent viral mutations. Shorter courses have been shown to be just as effective as longer courses and easier to administer.
Pain Relief
Most doctors recommend Tylenol, paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the pain of a UTI in children. A sitz bath, which has baking soda and warm water, is very alkaline and can reduce the pain of acidic urine on a damaged urinary tract. Small children may find it easier to relieve themselves without pain in a tub of warm water. Be sure to supervise children while bathing. If you see that they've urinated in the tub, be sure to drain the water and rinse them for hygiene purposes.
Preventing Urinary Tract Infections
Teach little girls wipe from front to back to prevent urinary tract infections. Never allow a boy's foreskin to be retracted. It grows adhered to the glans to protect the urethra. Bathe children with warm, clean water and rinse thoroughly. Do not encourage bubble baths or excessive use of chemicals on the body, and always rinse with running water. Be sure that children are thoroughly hydrated at all times. Urine is sterile and should keep the urinary tract clean on its own, under normal conditions.

About one in four American couples are infertile, which is defined as the inability to conceive after at least one year of unprotected sex. Both men and women can experience issues and conditions that affect their ability to reproduce. There are several things a couple can do to increase their chances of pregnancy.
Infertility in Men
Infertility in men can be caused by certain types of injuries to and disorders of the testes, which are responsible for producing sperm. Damage from viruses, radiation exposure, environmental toxins, heat damage from tight-fitting underwear or pants, use of recreational drugs, smoking, and cancer treatments cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin hydrochloride can cause infertility. Furthermore, systemic illnesses such as cirrhosis, Hodgkin's disease, sickle-cell anemia and acute fevers can also contribute to reproductive issues. The physical abnormality varicocele, in which blood gathers in the testicles, accounts for 20 to 40 percent of cases of infertility and can usually be remedied with surgery. Another physical cause is blockage of the spermatic ducts and can also be surgically corrected. Reduced blood levels of testosterone from the above conditions causes infertility because it lowers sperm production.
Beneficial Herbs
Astragalus increases sperm motility. Take 1,000 mg capsules three times a day. Black cohosh increases motility and viability of sperm. Take a 1,000 mg capsule daily. Dong quai also increases motility and viability. Take as a ferulic acid extract as directed on the label or as a tea. Epimedium stimulates semen creation and nerve activity in the sex organs. Take as directed by an herbalist. Ginseng increases the number of sperm and raises levels of testosterone. Take panax ginseng tincture as directed on the label.
Herbs to Avoid
Men suffering from infertility should avoid jambul, neem and vitex. St. John's wort, gingko and echinacea may hinder the sperm's ability to penetrate the egg.
Infertility in Women
Women who have trouble conceiving may suffer from a variety of conditions such as ovarian cysts, fallopian tube blockages, endometriosis, hypothyroidism and uterine fibroids. Failure of the ovaries to release an egg causes infertility as well. There is a complex hormonal balance that controls ovulation, and many factors, including stress and age, can disrupt this process. Some women suffer from ovulatory failure for no apparent reason at all.
Beneficial Herbs and Chinese Formulas
American ginseng stimulates uterine lining growth. Take tincture as directed on the label. Vitex also stimulates the growth of the uterine lining. Cinnamon twig and poria pill is a traditional Chinese herbal concoction that helps with ovulation. Peony and licorice decoction increases the chances of pregnancy, namely in women suffering from ovarian cysts. Warm the menses decoction treats infertility that is accompanied by bleeding between periods or irregular menstruation.
Herbs to Avoid
Women dealing with infertility should avoid the following herbs: amaranth, barley sprouts, blue cohosh, dong quai, gardenia, horse chestnut, neem and snake gourd root.
Other Recommendations
Men can take 25 mg of zinc daily because this can help restore testosterone levels and increase sperm count. Men can also Take 3,000 mg of L-carnitine daily. This can help normalize sperm, but do not take for longer than four months. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and marijuana, and also avoid soaking in hot tubs. For women, do not have sex every day during ovulation because the accompanying drop in sperm count can be counterproductive. Avoid exercise that is so demanding it interferes with regular menstruation. Avoid douches or vaginal lubricants. Avoid cigarettes and alcohol.
As one grows older, one develops a need for special items and devices to help in day-to-day living, due to arthritis, lack of mobility, incontinence and other specific problems of aging. Plush and comfortable reclining chair lifts with attached remotes are available for around $600 (see Resources below).
Prevention/Solution
As one gets older, the body starts to slow down, and bladder control may become difficult. Incontinence may affect a senior's lifestyle to a point where going to functions outside of the home isn't an option. Prevention of little accidents is possible with male and female personal undergarments that fit snugly and discreetly under normal, everyday clothes so that nobody suspects bladder dysfunction (see Resources below).
Benefits
Medicare recently abolished the "chair or bed confinement rule" so seniors could qualify for an electric mobility device such as a scooter or mobility chair. Medicare also abolished the need for a Certificate of Medical Necessity form. All one has to do to qualify is to have a need to move around in the home. Quoting Medicare: Medicare will accept, "...documentation in the medical record of the beneficiary's need for assistance with mobility in the home, as well as the type of technology needed," along with a written prescription from the doctor to the supplier.
Time Frame
Time is of the essence when it comes to seniors falling down and unable to get up due to healh conditions or medical emergencies. Living alone in the home through personal choice poses less of a risk for vulnerable seniors when wearing a medic alert necklace (see Resources below) where help is always at one's fingertips.

There is nothing worse than trying to enjoy the great outdoors and having to fend off the biting, stinging insects. In addition to the swelling and itching that accompanies these bites, many people develop allergies and must receive medical care immediately. Here are several home remedies that can take the sting out of a sting, and the bite out of a bite. There are also a few tips to avoid getting stung or bit in the first place.
Instructions
1. Put money on it. That's right, a bee sting or mosquito bite will stop swelling and itching if you put a penny on the bite. Wet the skin and hold a penny on the bite for about two minutes. The swelling should go down and the itching should stop. This works well right after you get bitten, and even later when you accidentally scratch that spot and it itches again.
2. Cover it up. Many old time remedies still apply. Cover the bites or stings with a paste made from mud and water, baking soda and water, aspirin and water or just plain old ice. Most of the time, these remedies can relieve the swelling and cool the bite.
3. Soothe it with Vick's Vapor Rub. This rub can be used in a variety of ways. Rub some into your pressure points, wrists, ankles, behind the knees, elbows and back of the neck to help keep bugs away. Rub some into the bites or stings and the itching vanishes immediately.
4. Take an anti-histamine. Many times after being stung or bitten, people have an allergic reaction that a anti-histamine will help by reducing the swelling, redness and pain.
5. Put out a do-not-disturb sign for the insects. Keep the perfume and cologne for the nights you go out to dinner. Add zinc to your diet. Many people who become insect feasts are deficient in zinc. Try adding Brewer's yeast or odorless garlic to your diet, also.

Hornets and wasps are similar in more than just the pain they cause. In fact, some insects that we call hornets, such as the bald-faced hornet, are actually more closely related to wasps than to hornets, according to Get Rid of Things. The primary difference between the two is that a hornets' nest is typically elevated, while a wasps' nest is more likely to be found underground. In either case, getting rid of their nests is a fairly simple problem to resolve.
Instructions
1. Use insecticide, in the form of hornet and wasp spray on either type of nest. Wear protective clothing and treat the nest at night. For an elevated nest, use a spray that projects about 15 to 20 feet. This will reach most nests and give you a safe distance to work with. If the nest is underground, use a small amount of the spray to avoid contaminating the ground.
2. Use boiling water as a safer method to get rid of an in-ground nest. Boil a pot of water and pour it into the hole leading to the underground part of the nest. Do this late at night to catch them while they sleep. This method may be less effective than an insecticide but it will do no harm to the environment.
3. Repeat either method up to three times or until you no longer see wasps or hornets in the area.
For years people have used vapor rubs to soothe congestion from colds and flu, but aromatherapy vapor rubs can help alleviate symptoms from headaches and muscle tension as well. Homemade vapor rubs made with essential oils have the benefit of being more economical and specially tailored to treat different symptoms.
Instructions
1. Melt petroleum jelly in a double boiler on low heat. Place a ceramic bowl in a saucepan so that the water reaches at least halfway up the sides of the bowl if you don't have a double boiler. Skip this step if using jojoba or sweet almond oil.
2. Add 10 to 15 drops of essential oils to melted petroleum jelly or jojoba or sweet almond oil. Use jojoba oil for rubs used on the face since it is non-greasy. Mix thoroughly.
3. Allow the vapor rub mixture to cool slightly if using petroleum jelly. Pour the mixture into your prepared, sterilized jar or container. Make sure your container seals tightly.
4. Store vapor rub in a childproof area. A petroleum jelly rub will solidify as it cools.
5. Rub onto chest and/or throat for relief from chest congestion or onto temples to relieve headaches. Wake yourself up throughout the day by using a vapor rub made with stimulating essential oils such as lemon.
Vichy, or table shower is usually used in conjunction with a massage.
People seek out a massage for many reasons. Among these are healing, relaxation, and stress relief. No matter the reason for the massage the ultimate goal is to feel better and relaxed. A table shower, sometimes called a Vichy shower, can add to that relaxation. During a table shower you relax under streams of warm water while your body is cleaned by a therapist.
Sequence
Shower tables have a handheld shower head.
Depending on the establishment, the table shower will occur either before or after the massage. Before the massage a table shower ensures that you are completely clean and likely enhances the experience for the therapist. After the massage the shower helps to remove the massage oil from your skin. This is particularly welcome in some instances where heavily scented oils are used.
Comfort Level
Regardless of before or after, the table shower is usually done completely nude. For this reason you must decide if you are comfortable with that nudity or not before entering the shower room. Some establishments will provide the client with disposable underwear to wear during the shower or at the very least cover the genitalia with a cloth.
Washing the Back
Most table showers begin with the client face down on a table. The table is designed to become wet and has drains on the sides. The therapist adjusts the water to a comfortable temperature before you lie on the table. Once the client is face down on the table, the client is wet from the neck to the soles of the feet. A loofah or washcloth is then used to lather the entire back side of the body. The hair and head are left untouched. Once the back is rinsed the therapist will ask the client to turn over.
Turning Over
It is at this point that some discomfort can present itself. If you were not provided with disposable underwear and are totally nude there is no way to avoid exposing the genitalia and breasts to the therapist. This exposure does not last long but it does happen, so be prepared for it. Most therapists will cover the genitalia with a cloth and in the case of breasts the client can request that they are covered.
Washing the Front and Conclusion
The process is repeated and the front part of the body is wet down, again avoiding the head and the face. The client is again washed with soap and then rinsed. Once complete, the therapist will leave the room while the client dries off. Most therapists will assist the client in sitting up prior to leaving the room.

Avoid beaches during the morning or evening hours to prevent sand flea bites.
For many, the summer means sun, flowers, the beach and, unfortunately, the return of sand fleas. The sand flea, also known as the "no-see-um" or the "hop-along," is a flea-like crustacean that stings instead of biting. Sand fleas usually attack in large numbers, causing many stings at once. You can repel the fleas using the same method you would use to avoid mosquitoes. However, the best method to avoid bites is to avoid locations and conditions in which sand fleas thrive. Sand fleas feed in early morning or late evening and are usually found at the beach or around marshy areas.
Instructions
1. Apply an insect repellent that contains DEET. Read the label to be sure that the insect repellent repels fleas in addition to mosquitoes. Follow the instructions for application and be careful to avoid getting any in your eyes.
2. Cover your skin, wearing shirts with long sleeves, long pants, shoes and socks. The flea cannot bite you if it is unable to get through layers of clothing. It is also important to note that sand fleas jump to a height of approximately 40 cm, or 16 inches, which means it is unusual to have a sand flea bite on your upper body.
3. Sit in a chair with your body off the sand to reduce the risk of bites.
4. Avoid being outside in the early morning hours or at dusk, when sand fleas are feeding. Especially avoid beaches or marshy areas at this time of day.
5. If you find yourself being attacked by sand fleas, there is little you can do other than brush them off of your skin and move from your current location, as they are quite persistent. Because the crustacean is extremely small, oftentimes the bites will occur before you are aware that sand fleas are in the vicinity. The only warning sand fleas may provide is a high-pitched whine that results from their swarming behavior. If you hear this, it is best to move or risk being bitten.

German measles, also known as rubella, is a contagious, though mild viral illness that generally afflicts children. Contracting German measles developed within the first four months of pregnancy may cause serious birth defects in infants. German measles affects the skin and the lymph glands located behind the ears and in the neck. German measles may lead to complications such as brain inflammation and blood disorders. The virus is usually spread by contact with an infected person, but because the incubation period may last from two to three weeks, it is often difficult to determine presence of the virus. Individuals are contagious one week before a skin rash breaks out to about one week after the appearence of a rash. Learn to identify the symptoms of German measles to prevent spreading it to others.
Instructions
1. Developing a fever is often one of the first signs of a viral or bacterial infection in the body. Fever associated wtih German measles is typically low grade, but may rise in some individuals, especially young children.
2. Stiffness in muscles and overall aches and pains accompany feverish symptoms, but is often mistaken for flu-like conditions.
3. Itching caused by a red rash usually appears on the head and body within 2 to 3 days after incubation period has passed. The rash is contagious and lasts 1 to 2 days.
4. Swollen lymph glands at the back and sides of the neck indicate that the immune system is fighting an infection.
5. Experiencing pain in the joints is often felt by adults. While children may also feel such pain, other symptoms generally tend to overwhelm this symptom.
6. Coughing, drowsiness or severe headaches that occur during care for German measles requires immediate attention, as does a high fever or red eyes.

Acidic Chinese medicine treatments are used to target ailments associated with liver dysfunction and other ailments associated with discharge and excess fluid in the body. Unlike many Western treatments that center around drugs or invasive treatments, traditional acidic Chinese medicine treatments focus on the properties of acidic foods to return balance to the body.
Acidic Chinese Medicine in Brief
Acidic Chinese medicine largely focuses on foods with acidic or sour flavors. In traditional Chinese medicine, the flavor of a food reveals its medicinal properties, and foods are categorized by four flavors: spicy, sour, sweet and salty. While Westerners prescribe foods based on their nutritional content, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners see flavors as the key to determining a food's beneficial properties. Depending on the specific needs of the individual, certain flavors should be emphasized and others should be minimized.
Liver Conditions
Acidic flavors enter the liver. Therefore, acidic Chinese medicinal treatments can be applied to conditions that involve the liver such as liver fire, liver qi stagnation and liver yang rising.
Liver fire
The symptoms of liver fire are associated with the Western medicine diagnoses of irritable bowel syndrome, attention deficit disorder, fibromyalgia, acid reflux disease, migraines, herpes, mania and bipolar disorder.
Liver qi stagnation
Liver qi stagnation is associated with PMS, infertility, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroenteritis, hepatitis, pelvic inflammatory disease and colitis among others.
Liver yang rising
This condition is associated with migraines, blurred vision and depression.
Discharge and Excess
Acidic flavors have the ability to absorb excess fluids in the body. Therefore, acidic foods are used to treat ailments associated with discharge and excess such as:
Chronic diarrhea
Dysentery
Hemorrhoids
Excessive bleeding (including wounds, hemorrhoids, blood in stool and other bleeding disorders)
Frequent urination and incontinence
Excessive sweating
Involuntary nocturnal emissions
Chronic cough
Acidic Foods
These foods are dominated by an acidic or sour flavor, which signifies that they target the liver and prevent discharge and excess fluid within the body.
Black plums
Raspberries
Lemons
Apples
Apricots
Kumquats
Lychee
Mandarin oranges
Mangoes
Olives
Peaches
Pineapples
Plums
Raspberries
Adzuki beans
Star fruit
Strawberries
Tangerines
Tomatoes
Vinegar
Pears
Plums
Balance
Keep in mind that while acidic Chinese medicine treatments prescribe a diet that is partial to sour flavors, balance is still the key to a proper diet and long-term health. Each flavor has negative and positive properties, and only when present together do they provide harmony to the internal organs. For example, while acidic flavors strengthen liver qi, they weaken spleen qi. Therefore, all five flavors should be consumed daily.

Acne blemishes cause minor damage that leaves scarring that appears as redness and inflammation. This scarring causes the skin to look covered in acne blemishes even after the pustules and cysts have cleared. Redness caused by acne scarring can be reduced by controlling the inflammation on the skin and removing dead skin from the face. A few household remedies will buff and lighten acne scarring effectively.
Instructions
1. Cleanse the skin with raw, stone-ground oats. Oats are mildly abrasive and contain vitamin E, which hydrates the skin. Oat are also anti-inflammatory, and will soothe the skin and reduce redness and swelling. Wet the skin with warm water. Pour 1/2 cup of raw oats into your hand, and wet it slightly under the water. Massage the wet oats onto the skin for one to two minutes, using circular movements. Rinse the skin completely afterward. Use oats to cleanse the skin once per day.
2. Apply chamomile oil. Chamomile oil is extremely anti-inflammatory and reduces redness dramatically when applied to the skin. Combine three drops of chamomile oil with five drops of jojoba oil to dilute it, then massage the oil onto the acne scarring for two minutes. Let the chamomile oil remain on the skin for an additional two minutes, then wipe away any remaining oil with a soft washcloth. Use chamomile oil on the skin up to three times per week.
3. Use an alkaline honey scrub. Both honey and baking soda are powerful redness reducers, and when combined will effectively remove dead skin from the face. When this dead skin is removed regularly, it helps eliminate skin discolorations that could be causing the acne scarring to look more red. Mix 1/4 cup of raw honey with 2 tbsp. of baking soda, and stir until they are combined. Spread the mixture onto wet skin, and use the fingertips to massage it in. After two to three minutes, rinse the skin thoroughly with warm water. Use a honey baking soda scrub once per week.
4. Apply a cucumber mask. Cucumbers naturally reduce inflammation on skin, which decreases the amount of redness in acne scars. Cucumbers also calm the skin and reduce fluid retention in the face. Slice a cucumber into thin slices, and drape the slices onto the skin, covering the areas of acne scarring. Let the cucumber slices remain on the skin for five to seven minutes, then rinse the skin with water. Cucumbers can be used on the skin once a day.

The avocado is a wonderful, complete food full of nutrients: vitamins A, b-complex, C, E, H, and K; essential minerals; more potassium than a banana; folic acid; Omega fatty acids; and every essential amino acid. With all this nutrition packed into one fruit, it's not surprising that avocados can benefit the outside of your body as well as the inside. The vitamins and creamy oil of the avocado make a super-moisturizing hair treatment that will leave your locks silky and naturally repaired.
Preparation
With a sharp knife, slice open the avocado lengthwise. Remove the pit by sticking it with the knife and twisting it out (be careful of your hands), or scoop it out with a spoon. Squeeze or spoon the green, fleshy part of the avocado into a clean bowl. Mash with a fork. Avocados go brown and spoil very quickly, so don't cut open the avocado unless you plan on using it immediately.
Basic Masque
A plain, mashed avocado makes a wonderful hair masque, without any additions. Separate your hair into easily manageable sections. Using your hands, massage the avocado into your scalp and work down the length of your hair, concentrating especially on the drier ends. Cover hair with a plastic shower cap or a towel. Heat will help the masque to penetrate the hair; you can apply heat with a hair drier for up to 20 minutes, or sit in the sun for an hour. If you're not using heat, leave the masque on for as long as possible before rinsing your hair in the shower.
Avocado, Olive Oil, & Egg
Mix the mashed flesh of an avocado with one egg yolk and a small amount of olive oil (try 1/2 tsp. for normal hair, and increase to 1 tbsp. for damaged hair). Apply to hair just as in the basic masque, wrap in a shower cap or towel, apply heat, and leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. In the shower, you'll need to use shampoo to get the olive oil completely washed out. Follow with your regular conditioner.
Other Additions
Create a different hair masque by adding one or more of these hydrating ingredients to your mashed avocado mixture: plain yogurt, a different oil (try almond, jojoba, or coconut), honey, mashed banana, lemon or lime juice, and aloe gel.
Avocado Oil Deep Conditioner
For extra-powerful conditioning, especially useful if your hair is fried, pick up a bottle of cold-pressed avocado oil at the grocery store. Warm the oil between your hands and massage into scalp. Then rub oil down the length of your entire head of hair (again, concentrate on the ends). Put your hair in a ponytail, towel, or shower cap, and leave on as long as possible -- if you don't have to leave the house, keep the oil on all day! This deep conditioning treatment will leave your hair incredibly soft and shiny when you shampoo it out.
Benefits
The proteins, vitamins, and natural oil in the avocado will soften and moisturize your hair, while adding nutrients and repairing old damage. Hair will be hydrated, shiny, and more elastic.

Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine started by Samueul Hahnemann in 1796. It is based on the theory that "like cures like" and uses minute diluted amounts of natural substances that cause effects similar to the disease that is meant to be treated. Homeopathic doctors are found worldwide and are especially popular in Europe, Australia, the U.S. and India. Most countries require some sort of license or certification to become a homeopathic doctor and practice homeopathic medicine, but it is still unregulated in some areas. There is much controversy as to the effectiveness of homeopathic medicine, and homeopathic doctors have been banned in some places.
History
Samuel Hanhemann came up with the central theory of homeopathy while experimenting with treatments for malaria. He found that the bark of the cinchona tree; which is a source of quinine and is used in treating malaria, produced some of the symptoms of malaria itself. This led him to further experiment with substances in minute doses that produced mild symptoms similar to the symptoms of the diseases he wished to treat. He published several books that outlined his findings and his treatment protocols for various diseases, but it is his final book, "The Organon of the Healing Ar,t" that is used by most homeopathic doctors today. By the 20th century, there were 22 homeopathic colleges worldwide. Homeopathy experienced a decline in the mid-20th century, but is today again gaining in popularity, due in part to the rise of alternative medicine.
Homeopathy today
Homeopathic doctors today practice in all parts of the world, and homeopathic medicine is accepted by many members of the alternative medical community. The National Center for Homeopathy lists almost 700 homeopathic doctors in the United States alone. In some European countries with socialized health care, homeopathic doctors and treatments are covered by insurance.
Homeopathic doctors
Homeopathic doctors usually go to a homeopathic medical school and obtain a degree, just like a regular doctor. The National Center for Homeopathy lists 28 schools that teach homeopathy worldwide. The designation of CCH or Nationally Certified Classical Homeopath is used when practitioners pass the board exam given by state or national members of the North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH). Other countries have other various certifying bodies, although homeopathy is unregulated in many parts of the world.
Controversy
There is a lot of controversy in the mainstream medical community as to whether homeopathic doctors are practicing a legitimate form of medicine. Many trials show positive results from homeopathic treatment, but many medical professionals dispute the accuracy of the findings as well as the circumstances of the trials. In 2005, the Swiss government released its findings after performing more than 200 trials on homeopathic medicine. The researchers, publishing their findings in the journal Lancet, concluded that the effects of homeopathic medicine are nothing more than placebo effects. The Swiss government soon dropped homeopathy from its national health insurance coverage.
Considerations
Many alternative health practitioners are also knowledgeable or cross trained in the theories of homeopathy and integrate Hanhemann's precepts into their practices. Many of the most popular and traditional homeopathic formulas are available over-the-counter without a prescription. Visiting a homeopathic doctor who specializes in homeopathic medicine may not be necessary to experience whatever benefit homeopathy may provide.

According to the American Cancer Society's Global Cancer Facts and Figures, more than 12 million people receive a diagnosis of cancer each year. Fear, anxiety and depression are common responses to the disease, which has the potential to attack any part of the body. Cancer not only places physical demands on the body but also affects the mind and emotions. Cancer patients tend to feel alone or isolated, making it important to receive encouragement, support and motivation---an important part of accepting diagnosis, completing treatment and leading a normal life.
Instructions
1. Offer a helping hand. Between cancer treatments and routine doctor visits, cancer is an exhausting experience. Show your support by offering help where needed, such as babysitting children, cleaning the house, providing transportation to doctor appointments or cooking meals.
2. Ease fears with physical touch. It is common to feel untouchable or even "contagious" when diagnosed with cancer. Hugs, kisses and other forms of physical contact can bring comfort.
3. Involve close friends and relatives. Surrounding a cancer patient with the warmth and support of friends and family members lets her know she is in the thoughts of loved ones. Bring cards or arrange phone calls with out-of-towners.
4. Post inspirational quotes. Cancer patients find hope and encouragement through daily affirmations of life and living. Create a bulletin board that displays a rotation of positive thoughts.
5. Decorate the room with fresh flowers. The sight and scent of fresh flowers uplifts the spirit. Choose brightly colored blooms, like roses, carnations, daffodils and tulips.
6. Share success stories. Give encouragement by drawing attention to the latest survivor stories of cancer patients and the terminally ill. Highlight tales that illustrate individuals beating the odds.
7. Smile. One of the biggest concerns for many cancer patients is how their loved ones and friends are handling their illness. A smile not only brightens the mood, but also fuels a positive attitude and recovery.
Healing with the gemstone charoite is believed to alleviate fear and bestow courage.
Charoite is a crystal stone named after its place of origin, the Chara River in Siberia, Russia. It develops in varying shades of the color purple, from deep royal purple to violet, lavender and even lilac. According to Bernadine Fine Art Jewelry each stone has distinctive swirls of clear crystal, black augite and some specks of orange tinaksite. The stone's purported benefits to human beings range from physical healing to emotional encouragement to spiritual transformation.
Physical Healing
According to Shimmerlings and Charms of Light, the charoite gemstone regulates blood pressure and speeds the healing of all kinds of ailments. Among these are headaches, alcohol toxicity, liver disease, muscle cramps, nervous system conditions and disorders of the eye. According to Majestic Quartz charoite is added to wands, eggs and other massage tools for application next to the body. Rainbow Crystal spiritualists recommend placing charoite underneath a pillow before sleeping to alleviate nightmares and cure insomnia. Using charoite and amethyst together amplifies its power. Shimmerlings claims that charoite has the power to deflect harmful radiation and should be worn by X-ray technicians and others who work with radioactive materials.
Emotional Healing
Rainbow Crystal explains that charoite should be worn or carried by people who are socially withdrawn or otherwise emotionally blocked from living life to its fullest potential. Charoite is reported to alleviate crippling fear by making the carrier understand deep-seated worries upon meditation with the stone. Once fears are brought to the conscious mind, the stone helps emotionally damaged people conquer these emotions by bestowing two essential gifts. It gives courage to confront fears and the mental commitment to follow through with this actualization. According to Skyline Minerals, charoite relieves loneliness and warms the heart.
Spiritual Transformation
According to Shimmerlings, once emotional healing begins with charoite and fears are replaced with courage and self-esteem, spiritual transformation begins. With the release of negative emotions, it is believed that negative spirits or entities exit the body. This process is reported to leave the person open to receiving love and acquiring a sensitivity to clairvoyance or an opening of the third eye. Shimmerlings explains that Mongols believe in the love-enhancing abilities of the charoite gemstone, as they boil the stone in tea and drink the tea at gatherings to strengthen family ties. They also believe that drinking charoite-infused tea protects their spirits from evil influences.

Is your back sore from muscle knots and spasms? The pain from muscle knots and spasms can be unbearable and can cause lack of sleep, interfere with work and disrupt your life.
Instructions
1. I would regularly get muscle knots and spasms in my upper back, next to my shoulder blades, that would be so painful that I couldn't sleep or work. Eventually, I was able to rid myself of muscle knots and spasms by incorporating three things into my life.
2. Stretch. Every morning, take the time to stretch your body and warm up as soon as you wake up. Start with deep breathing with your arms stretched out in front of you. Inhale with your palms turned upward, then exhale with your palms turning downward. Do this a few times, filling your lungs completely and exhaling completely. Also stretch your arms by placing your arms, one at a time, straight across your chest while using the back of your other hand to press your arm against your chest while exhaling deeply. Do this for both arms. Finally, while laying on your back, stretch your hamstrings by bringing your knee to your chest, and stretch the front of your thighs by pulling your feet backward towards your back.
3. Exercise. Get moderate exercise to keep your body in shape. Exercise by playing sports, running, walking, swimming, gardening, yard work, or any physical activity to work out your muscles. Body weight exercises like pushups, squats and crunches are good for an overall body workout.
4. Water. This is the secret weapon of the trio discussed here. I didn't believe it when it was first taught to me, but drinking enough water is the key. Drinking 8 cups of water a day will help to flush your body of toxins, including excessive salt. First thing in the morning (after your stretching), drink 16 fluid ounces of pure fresh water. Within 2 hours, you should start to feel the difference. Continue drinking water throughout the day until you drink your 8 cups a day.

Do not let jealousy put a wedge in your relationship.
Jealousy can rear its head in many ways, such as being jealous of a co-worker's promotion or a husband speaking to another woman. "Psychology Today" summed up jealousy quite well in describing it as a "reaction to a perceived threat." Whether the threat is real or not does not matter. The jealousy can cause you emotional pain and suffering and ruin personal relationships. The good news is that jealousy can be controlled, but the bad news is it may take a while --- with several setbacks along the way --- before you finally overcome it.
Instructions
1. Find the root of your jealousy. You need to spend some time alone and think about what is causing your jealous feelings. After all, you cannot fix something if you do not know the cause. Perhaps you were cheated on in the past, or your father cheated on your mother. Write down the things that come to mind. Now, you need to let these things go. Tell yourself these things happened in the past and look toward the future. Keep reminding yourself that these things are in the past.
2. Learn to love yourself. This is an ongoing process and will not happen overnight. Yet, you cannot overcome jealousy if you do not really believe in yourself and suffer low self-esteem. Remind yourself every day that you are a good person who deserves to be loved. Give yourself a positive pep talk when you are feeling down.
3. Use visualization to control jealousy. Picture yourself in your favorite place. Think about a painful moment that caused deep jealousy. Allow yourself to feel the pain for at least a minute. Stop the exercise and make note of your feelings. Try the exercise another day and visualize your favorite place. This time, feel the sun in your favorite place giving you the energy to overcome any jealous and hurtful feelings. Feel the new control you have acquired. Imagine you get to relive the jealous moment any way you want. Remember you have control and wisdom now. This exercise teaches you that you can control your emotions and manage your jealous feelings.
4. Speak to the person who invokes jealousy in you. Explain that you need his assistance to overcome your jealous feelings. Perhaps you need him to call you when he is working late, for instance. Let him know in a calm manner that you are trying to control and overcome your jealousy. You will become more secure in your relationship and hopefully less jealous as you see he is willing to make the effort.
5. Manage your anxiety. Anxious feelings can contribute to jealousy. Practice yoga, which is helpful and calming. Try to get enough sleep and eat right. Go for walks. Whatever you do, remember to take care of yourself, so that you relax and deal with your anxiety and jealousy.

Impingement surgery can be used to correct problems in joints. It is most commonly used for hip and shoulder joints, but can be used for knee and elbow problems too. Impingement is a joint problem that causes pain and tenderness while moving the joint and sometimes even when it's at rest. You need to prepare for impingement surgery to increase its chance of success.
Instructions
Prepare for Your Impingement Surgery
1. Research which type of surgery is best for your joint problem, as your doctor may recommend either arthroscopic or open surgery. Arthroscopic surgery uses only a few very small incisions and the surgeons guide a tiny camera into your joint to find and correct the problem. Open surgery means that the surgeons use larger incisions to view the joint directly.
2. Find someone to drive you both to and from surgery. Almost all anesthetics will render you unable to drive or operate heavy machinery for several hours after your operation.
3. Plan a rehabilitation program with your doctor. After your joint heals from surgery, you will probably need some physical therapy in order to strengthen the joint and restore its movement. Try to find a physical therapist you like before you have impingement surgery.
4. Follow the doctor's orders to prepare for surgery. Depending on whether you are having local or general anesthesia, you may be required not to eat for 12 hours before your operation. The surgeon will likely ask that you not smoke before or after the surgery because smoking thins your blood and can complicate blood clotting.
5. Talk to your doctor about the kinds of medication you'll be taking after your impingement surgery. Be sure your doctor knows about all of your allergies. Also, you may be asked not to take aspirin or any pain relief medication for several days after the surgery because it can thin your blood as well.

There are multiple methods for taking the dreadlocks out of your hair without any discomfort.
Dreadlocks are very tightly knotted or braided twists in hair, a style that has been around pretty much since the dawn of mankind. If you want to replace your dreads with a fresh look, or are looking to change to a style that may be perceived as more acceptable in the professional world, you can cut the dreadlocks or, if you want to keep your hair length, you can perform a "take down."
Instructions
Removing Dreadlocks by Cutting Them Off
1. Grow your hair out to the point where about 1 inch near the scalp does not contain any dreadlocks. This allows you to have room to cut the hair without pulling on your scalp, which causes discomfort. Do not twist the hair near the scalp while it is growing out, so that it will be easier to cut.
2. Hold the dreadlock upward and shave the hair near the scalp with the hair clippers. Repeat for each dreadlock that you want removed from your head.
3. Cut the hair between the scalp and the dreadlock to remove it with a pair of scissors. Repeat for each lock until all the dreads have been removed. This is the most commonly used method for removing dreadlocks from your hair, and can also alleviate the need to perform a "take down" procedure.
Removing Dreadlocks in the Take Down Method
4. Purchase a take down remover and detangler for dreadlocks from your local beauty supply store, or acquire a few bottles of shampoo and hair conditioner. Both will work to untangle the hair that has been formed into dreadlocks, so it is a matter of preference.
5. Trim 1 to 2 inches off the tip of each dreadlock. This part of the dread will be its oldest growth, and is also the most tangled part. Cutting the oldest growth of each dread will let you pull apart each lock with the hair pick.
6. Loosen the knotted locks using the take down detangler, or with the shampoo and hair conditioner, as instructed on the packaging instructions. Apply the recommended amount of hair product to your scalp, then work it into each dreadlock with your fingertips. Rinse and repeat as indicated on the bottle. Repeat the process for a couple of days, until the hair looks like it could be picked apart with the hair pick.
7. Untangle the dreadlocks with the hair pick to remove the locks that remain. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the dreadlocks have been removed from your hair.

If you have been to a dentist, you have probably seen a dental dry vacuum in action. Dental dry vacuums are the little suction tubes that the dentist places in your mouth to help suck up saliva and other fluids. These dry vacuums usually have a flexible plastic end as the end piece, which allows the dentist to hang them from your mouth or change the angle to get at all recesses of the mouth. Their ability to remove liquid from your mouth helps the dentist in two ways. By removing excess fluid, these vacuum pumps improve visibility, so your dentist can see what he is doing. They also assist in cleaning out the mouth, as often dentists will use a water rinse to help get plaque and bacteria out once he has cleaned the mouth.
Dental Dry Vacuum Mechanism
Dental dry vacuums have two main functional parts: the actual vacuum and the mouthpiece. The vacuum works by pumping air out of the central compartment. This generates negative air pressure within the compartment (relative to atmospheric pressure), causing air to rush in through the mouthpiece, which is the "open" end. The mouthpiece is connected to the central compartment via a long tube that has an airtight seal. This means that the only way for air to get into the central compartment is the open end of the mouthpiece, which causes the machine to generate suction at that open end of the mouthpiece. This suction then pulls in air and liquid from your mouth as the dentist works.
Advantages of Dry Vacuums
One of the main advantages of using a dry vacuum for dental work is the relative energy efficiency; it is far easier to pump air and generate negative pressure that way than it is to pump liquid out of a container. This method also allows for the liquid waste to be stored and then disposed of carefully, as it could be biologically dangerous. In addition, the negative pressure generated by a dry vacuum is sufficient to suck down liquids but is not strong enough to cause damage to the soft tissues of the mouth.

Bariatric surgery is an option for those that are obese and are unable to control their weight through diet and exercise. There are two types of bariatric surgery. A restrictive surgery limits the amount of food the stomach can hold by creating a pouch and closing off the rest of the stomach. A malabsorptive surgery will bypass sections of the small intestine which will limit the amount of calories that your body absorbs. One of the major changes after bariatric surgery is the amount of food that you can eat. The most popular bariatric surgery is a gastric bypass. This surgery creates a smaller stomach. Your new stomach is the size of a walnut and can only hold 1 oz. of food. Important changes occur as your body loses a drastic amount of weight.
A Healthy Heart
Bariatric surgery can extend your life by reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. High blood pressure can be a silent killer that can severely damage your blood vessels and arteries.Losing excess weight can help you control your blood pressure. High blood pressure medications may not be necessary after surgery if your blood pressure returns to normal. Losing weight can also prevent heart failure.
Type 2 Diabetes
Obese patients are frequently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. This disease causes high amounts of glucose in the blood and occurs when the body does not respond properly to insulin (hormones released by the pancreas). Some patients are able to maintain healthy glucose levels after surgery. There is an improvement in the levels of glucose even if the patient has not reached his target weight. The risk of blindness and kidney failure associated with diabetes will decrease. More than 50% of patients are able to cure their diabetes one year after surgery. Losing weight can also prevent the onset of diabetes.
Breathing Easier
Shedding those pounds will help you to sleep better at night. Many patients suffering from sleep apnea noticed that their symptoms improved after surgery. Sleep apnea causes constant disruptions when you are sleeping. You may wake up gasping and coughing because you have temporarily stopped breathing. Sleep apnea can cause exhaustion and fatigue during the day. Being overweight can contribute to sleep apnea. Weight loss will allow you to reach deep stages of sleep and you will feel rested
Side Effects of Bariatric Surgery
Some patients have complained of side effects as their body adjusts to the new stomach anatomy. After surgery, there must be diet changes. Eating too quickly or eating large bites will cause nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. You will be unable to consume large amounts of foods because you might feel severe pain behind the breastbone. You will not be able to eat very dry or tough foods. Dehydration is a common problem after surgery. It is advised that you drink at least 2 liters of liquid daily. Not drinking enough fluid can cause nausea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance. Vitamin deficiencies can occur if you are dehydrated from vomiting.
Dumping Syndrome
A condition, also known as "dumping syndrome" may occur if the stomach empties the ingested food too quickly into the small intestine. Foods that are high in sugar or fried foods can cause dumping syndrome. Symptoms of this syndrome include nausea, fatigue, weakness, faintness, rapid heart beat, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea. Constipation is another complaint after bariatric surgery. This is due to the decrease and size of bowel movements. Eating more fiber, exercising, and drinking more fluids can alleviate this problem.

Suffering a stroke is a serious health risk that afflicts about 700,000 Americans every year. Though most survive, the ability to identify stroke symptoms early plays an important role in the overall effects of a stroke. The most common symptoms of stroke are identical in men and women, but there is some evidence to suggest gender can be a factor in which of the symptoms are more frequently exhibited. Weakness in the face or extremities, confusion, slurred speech and difficulty walking are the three most common signs and symptoms of stroke for men and women.
Identification
A stroke is oxygen deprivation to the brain and resulting damage that occurs due to blockage or bleeding. The brain itself consumes about 20 percent of the oxygen taken in through respiration. If the blood vessels in the head are unable to deliver oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood to the brain, serious damage, loss of brain function and even death can result if treatment is not administered quickly. The presence of stroke symptoms is an indication that at least temporary loss of brain function is already occurring.
Traditional Symptoms
According to the American Heart Association, there are five common, traditional symptoms of stroke. These symptoms are numbness or weakness in the face or an extremity (particularly on one side of the body), trouble speaking or confusion, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, dizziness or difficulty walking and severe headache. The sudden onset of any of these symptoms is itself an indication of a possible stroke in both men and women. The association does not distinguish between symptoms for men and women.
Prodromal Symptoms
Prodromal symptoms are those that occur at and indicate the onset of a disease or condition. For a stroke, prodromal symptoms occur more than 24 hours before serious symptoms signal acute stroke and lead to hospital admission. In at least one study (Resource 2), the most common prodromal symptoms in women and men were identical. They were weakness, difficulty in speaking and difficulty in walking. Only about one third of both men and women reported prodromal symptoms at all.
Acute Symptoms
In the same study, symptoms that occurred within the 24 hours of admission to the hospital were considered acute. Again, the most commonly reported acute symptoms were identical in women and men. Again, they were weakness, difficulty in speaking and difficulty in walking. A separate study (Reference 3) found that the frequency of two of these symptoms could be correlated with gender. Though facial weakness is the most common symptom in both men and women, it is reported somewhat more often in women; though difficulty walking is the third most common symptom in both men and women, it is reported somewhat more often in men.
Importance of Symptoms
Though risk factors for stroke can be identified in advance, an actual stroke is difficult to identify and diagnose until actual symptoms are present. At that point, every minute that elapses without emergency medical treatment can result in significant and lasting brain damage. Thus, recognizing the symptoms of stroke early can have a substantial effect on chance of survival and quality of life after a stroke.
