Prevent Nerve Deafness

The Middle Ear


Nerve deafness results from nerve damage to the middle ear, usually a consequence of overexposure to loud sounds. This occurs when the hair follicles in the cochlea are damaged and unable to send sound to the brain for interpretation. The degree of nerve deafness varies and usually gets worse with time. Follow these guidelines to prevent nerve deafness.


Instructions


1. Avoid loud noise. Play your television and music at comfortable levels and resist the urge to amplify your favorite songs and television shows. Do not increase the television volume so you can hear it from another room.


2. Ask for assistance from others to protect your hearing. If you are around loud, unnecessary noises, such as an amplified stereo, ask the person to lower the volume. If that is not possible, leave the environment until the amplified sounds subside.








3. Buy earplugs and keep them with you at all times. Find places to keep an extra pair of earplugs such as a glove compartment or gym bag. Take them with you when traveling and always have a pair in your medicine cabinet or nightstand.


4. Treat a fever immediately. High fevers will damage hair follicles in the inner ear, causing nerve deafness. A fever may indicate a serious illness, like meningitis, which can be fatal or cause permanent hearing loss if not treated in time.


5. Seek medical attention for reoccurring episodes of dizziness. If you have frequent and reoccurring dizziness, it could indicate hearing loss or another serious medical condition. Vertigo and Meniere's disease are serious medical conditions that are often associated with hearing loss and nerve deafness.


6. Ask for an alternative drug if your medication causes ototoxicity. Some drugs induce hearing loss such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. Drugs for chemotherapy save lives, but the lasting side effect may permanently damage your hearing.


7. Prevent trauma to the head. Physical trauma will cause damage to the middle ear so wear a helmet and practice safety precautions when performing physical activities. Prevent or leave physically abusive environments, and prevent your children from using physical force to solve disagreements.

South Beach Diet For Vegetarians

The South Beach Diet is great for vegetarians. Plenty of substitutes for protein are available. Some such substitutes include legumes, soy and beans. Phase 3 is designed for when you reach maintenance. Maintenance is where you have achieved your desired weight goal. Phase 3 lets you eat a variety of foods; the food you eat is up to you. By the time you reach Phase 3, you should know choose the food you eat. This means that you can eat what you want under the restrictions of the South Beach Diet that you have learned during Phase 1 and 2.

Gonalf Side Effects

Gonal-F is a brand name for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a naturally occurring hormone used as a fertility drug. Gonal-F stimulates ovulation and production of multiple follicles (eggs) in women, and stimulates sperm production in men. Many side effects are possible, some serious.


Common Side Effects


Several side effects are common with Gonal-F. These include abdominal pain, breast pain, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, ovarian cysts and upset stomach.


Considerations


Gonal-F increases the potential for multiple births, which can be risky for both mother and babies. Premature babies may face life-threatening complications and develop long-term health problems. Postpartum depression rates are significantly higher in women with multiple births.

What Are The Causes Of A Weak Bladder In Men

A weak bladder refers to urinary incontinence and is common in both men and women. Urinary incontinence is the accidental release of urine from the bladder. Usually, a weak bladder is the sign of a secondary underlying condition in the urinary tract, rather than the result of a disease itself.

Recovery From Shoulder Decompression Surgery

Shoulder decompression is a surgical procedure to create more space in the area between the humerus (long bone of the upper arm) and the acromion (a bony projection of the shoulder blade). More space here should relieve impingement of structures that may be causing pain, popping, numbness and tingling.


The successful recovery from shoulder decompression surgery largely depends on not only the skill of a surgeon, but also a proper exercise program. The goal of an exercise program after this surgery is to restore the patient to activity as quickly and safely as possible.








Phase 1


Phase 1 focuses on restoration of motion in a nonpainful manner and reduction in pain and inflammation. A sling may be used for comfort during the first two weeks and at night while sleeping. Early motion is important, but end ranges may be restricted by a post-operative protocol. No strengthening)exercises are performed in this early stage.


Motion exercises include passive range of motion, or motion assisted by a licensed physical therapist in all of the motions of the shoulder except across the body. Cross-body motions are avoided initially to promote healing at the surgical site. Passive motion is also performed at the elbow.


Phase 2


To progress to Phase 2, there must be minimal pain and tenderness, as well as almost complete range of motion. This portion of recovery initiates isometric strengthening of the rotator cuff and progresses to the use of resistance tubing. Isometric exercises are done statically, meaning the joint angle and muscle length remain unchanged during the muscular contraction.








Rotator cuff strengthening Includes internal and external rotation and abduction (moving the arm away from the body).


Phase 2 also incorporates strengthening of the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder surrounding the scapula, or shoulder blade.


Phase 3


Criteria to enter Phase 3 consists of full and painless range of motion, strength of at least 50 percent of the nonsurgical side and minimal or no pain overall. Muscle strengthening exercises for the rotator cuff and shoulder stabilizers is advanced to more resistance. Flexibility and range of motion exercises are continued to maintain the progress made in earlier phases.

Many cultures believe that energy can settle in a space and cause the occupants to feel certain emotions. Sometimes, spiritual individuals may feel the need to cleanse their homes to get rid of negative energy that may have been caused by negative thoughts, stress or just plain clutter. Cleansing can be done at any time using salt and sage. Both salt and sage have healing and medicinal properties.


Instructions


1. Mix sea salt and water in a small bowl until the salt dissolves. You can use tap water, but distilled water has fewer contaminants and may be better for cleansing. Clear your mind and focus on the positive aspects of your life. Negative feelings during a cleansing is counterproductive.


2. Hold the small bowl of water and walk around the four corners of your home, sprinkling the water as you go. It may help to imagine the negative energy scurrying away through the walls like pests running from an exterminator.








3. Go inside the rooms, sprinking the sea salt and water mixture in every area of the rooms including the closets and storage spaces. The most effective cleansing will be one that reaches the entire home. Come back to the main room of the house near the front door to prepare for the sage aspect of the cleansing.


4. Light a sage bundle like you would an incense. Hold it over a small bowl to catch the ashes. With the smoke coming out of the lit sage, begin near the front door and walk around the main room, allowing the smoke to freely reach every corner, window, wall and the ceiling. This is called smudging or "cleansing smoke bath."


5. Continue smudging until you have covered the entire house. Make sure to run the sage around doors and windows. While doing the cleansing, you can say prayers, blessings or invocations to help clear away negativite energy and open your home to good energy.

Perineal Cleansing

Proper perineal care is essential to urinary health. Without proper care, the patient is susceptible to constant bladder infections and bottom bedsores. Proper perineal care also maintains the patient's dignity and keeps her feeling clean and in charge. Perineal cleansing is one of the first techniques you will learn as a nurse's assistant or home health aide.


Proper Technique


Having a stranger clean the perineal area can be embarrassing for a patient unable to help himself. Always approach your patient kindly and explain what you are going to do and why you have to do it. If your patient is able to clean parts of himself independently, let him do so, but make sure he is doing it correctly.








Upon arriving in the room, tell your patient what you need to do and get his permission to proceed. If he does not want you to perform the care even after persuasion, ask a nurse or doctor to come in and talk to him about the importance of perineal cleanliness. Once you gain permission, wash your hands thoroughly and put on rubber gloves. Draw the curtain around the bed for privacy and set your supplies out on a table near the bed. Help your patient undress his bottom half.


Some health facilities use washbasins and rags for perineal care but most have switched to using disinfectant and soft wipes to heighten the sterility, cleanliness and ease of the process. Take a wipe and spray it with disinfectant until it is damp but not dripping. Gently begin cleaning and wiping the area, working from the outside in and wiping from the front of the genital area to the back. Never wipe from the anus towards the urethra. It is an easy way to encourage a nasty bladder infection. Wipe the entire area, throwing out the cloth and using a new one after every wipe. Then ask the patient to roll to one side and clean the newly exposed area in the same manner as before. Ask him to roll to the other side and clean that area as well. For men, always clean from the tip of the penis downward. If the man in uncircumcised, be sure to clean underneath the foreskin. For women, wipe from the pubis to the anus and be sure to clean between all folds of the vagina.


When the entire area, front and back, is clean, make sure the skin is completely dry before putting the underwear or briefs on. Damp skin within the underwear induces bacterial infections and can create or exaggerate existing pressure ulcers or bedsores. Make sure the patient is comfortable before you leave and thank him for cooperating. Wash your hands before you leave.

Tape For A Hamstring Strain







Your hamstrings are tendons that connect the large muscles at the back of your thighs to your thigh bones. Because the muscles they hold are so large and are used in nearly every sporting activity, hamstrings take quite a beating. If they take too much stress, however, they can stretch too far. This is often called a hamstring strain or pull. One way to alleviate the pressure of a hamstring strain is to tape the area for extra support.


Instructions


Try to Avoid Hamstring Strain


1. Stretch before and after all strenuous activity. Your hamstrings are more likely to be injured if they are not properly loosened. Sit on the floor with your legs in front of you, and bend at the waist until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds.


2. Warm up your legs before you exercise. Jogging or fast walking for about 5 minutes prior to heavy exercises can loosen the hamstrings to help prevent injury.


3. Slim down. Extra weight on your body creates more strain on your leg muscles, which rely on the hamstrings to hold your knees in place. Even shedding a couple of pounds can help.


Treat the Strain Before You Tape It


4. Get off you feet and stay off them. Sports medicine experts say that rest is the most important part of recovery from a hamstring strain. Resting allows the tendons to heal properly.








5. Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling. Place crushed ice in a plastic bag and wrap it in a towel. Place this on the back of your leg for about 15 minutes of every hour. Ice reduces the flow of blood to the injured area, thereby reducing swelling.


6. Try elevating your leg above your hear to further impede swelling. You can do this by resting your leg on a stack of pillows for support.


Tape Your Hamstrings


7. Wrap athletic tape around your thigh from just above the knee to a few inches below the groin. Taping serves to keep the leg from swelling further.


8. Adjust the tightness of the tape as time passes. Your tape should be snug, but not so tight that the part of your leg that is untaped swells from the pressure.

After Effects Of Prostate Surgery







Prostate surgery may be recommended for an enlarged prostate, chronic prostatitis (inflamed prostate) and prostate cancer. The type of surgery involved depends upon which type of prostate problem is being treated and the size of the prostrate. Open surgery with complete removal of the prostate is usually performed when prostate cancer is diagnosed. Laparoscopic, laser, robotic and transurethral resection surgeries may also be performed to remove part of or the entire prostate. Temporary Post Operative Effects

Incontinence

Semen Production


Individuals who undergo a complete or radical prostate removal procedure lose the ability to produce semen. Disenrolling from a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) health plan takes a few simple steps. Every HMO may have a different disenrollment process, so it is best to call prior to disenrolling to confirm their process. If you are enrolling in a new plan, you want to coordinate the termination of the HMO plan with the effective date of your new plan, as disenrollment dates may vary by plan. Lastly, if you are enrolled in an employer-sponsored plan, you can only disenroll during the open enrollment period, unless you have a qualifying event such as job loss.


Instructions


1. Call the number on the back of your health insurance ID card and tell the customer service representative you want to disenroll from the HMO plan. They will ask you why you want to disenroll and the date you want to stop coverage. You may have to wait until the last day of the month in which you want to disenroll depending on plan rules.


2. Complete any required disenrollment forms and mail or fax the forms to the address or number located on the forms. Obtain disenrollment forms from the HMO's website, from your employer or from the HMO upon request when you call.


3. Choose to disenroll in in an employer-sponsored plan during the open enrollment period. Your HR department will guide you through your employer's process. If you leave or lose your job, you will receive information from your employer as to your last day of HMO coverage. You will be automatically disenrolled from the HMO if you do not elect COBRA coverage.


4. Enroll in another Medicare Advantage HMO plan or call 1-800-MEDICARE if voluntarily disenrolling in a Medicare Advantage HMO plan. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) determines the open enrollment and disenrollment periods each calendar year. Disenrollment must occur at this time.


5. Miss several premium payments. Most HMO plans will disenroll members based on non-payment of premiums. This is not recommended if you plan to re-enroll in the same plan later because the plan may view this as breaking a contract if you had committed to the policy for a period of time.

Carpenter Bee Sting Reaction

Carpenter bees look very similar to bumblebees, but have a shiny black abdomen instead of a hairy, black and yellow one. They burrow into wood to use as a nesting site, which can include wood in homes, making them a potential threat for humans. The sting of a carpenter bee could potentially cause a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Reactions to bee stings vary by individual and the amount of venom administered. The Sting Process


Male carpenter bees are usually more aggressive toward humans than females, yet they are not equipped with stingers. Females are able to sting, but do not usually do so unless directly provoked, as they are not nearly aggressive as males. Once they sting, though, it can be quite painful.


Venom Chemical Make-up


Bee venom is quite complex compared to the venom of other insects, such as wasps. It includes a lot of protein, namely mellitin, which is thought to be responsible for allergic reactions, according to Thor Lehnert of Bioenvironmental Bee Laboratory. It also contains histamine and several enzymes responsible for the rest of the human reaction, including the swelling, spreading and pain of the sting.


Normal Reaction


In someone who is not allergic to bees, the reaction will most likely just be a localized swelling around the sting site. The amount of swelling will vary depending on who is stung and how much venom was injected. Some people, though not technically allergic, will be more sensitive to a sting than others. The swelling could be almost non-existent or take up a large portion of the affected area. There will also most likely be redness associated with the swelling.








Normal Treatment


Meat tenderizer, which has then enzyme Papain in it, will break down the proteins in the venom to relieve the sting effects quickly. Cortisone, which is an anti-inflammatory, will also provide relief to pain and swelling. For more severe reactions that are not anaphylactic, a dose of an antihistamine might be beneficial. An example of this type of reaction would be welts or hives all over the body, without losing the ability to breathe normally. Also, a cold compress at the sting site will help the pain.


Anaphylaxis








Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that results in the loss of your airway, making it impossible to breath fully. If this type of reaction continues, it could result in a complete loss of the airway, shock and possibly death. To become allergic to bee venom, you must have been exposed at least once before. The first exposure introduces the foreign venom to your body, and your body determines that it is dangerous. The next time the body is exposed, it attacks the venom with histamines and other chemicals, which causes the severe reaction. The length of time that this takes varies depending on the individual and the specific occurrence. You could react after an hour one time, and after only five minutes another time. Other symptoms besides loss of an airway include full body hives, itching and swelling.


Anaphylaxis Treatment


Epinephrine is the most effective and quickest treatment for an allergic reaction to bee stings. This usually comes in the form of an injection device called an Epi-pen. Many people who are severely allergic to bees carry an Epi-pen with them wherever they go, so they can administer it immediately if stung. If there is no epinephrine available, an antihistamine can be given as long as the allergic person can still swallow. This will work much slower, and it is still important to get that person to the hospital as quickly as possible.

According to the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), approximately 581,000 total knee replacement surgeries are performed each year in the United States. The reasons for having this surgery include severe arthritic damage, trouble walking or climbing stairs, and persistent pain. If all other non-invasive avenues to improve your condition are not successful, knee replacement surgery may be your only option. One side effect of knee surgery is tightening or stiffness. Before you consider further surgery, there may be other ways to alleviate your discomfort.


Pre-Operative Condition


One explanation for persistent knee stiffness following surgery could be the condition your joint was in prior to your procedure. In the article, Stiffness After Total Knee Arthroplasty, published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, doctors found that patients complaining of stiffness in the knee following surgery had significantly less flexibility and extension in the joint prior to surgery. Age, gender and type of surgical implant played no role in their symptoms. Fortunately, out of 1,000 subjects participating in this study, knee stiffness occurred in only 1.3 percent of subjects.


Motivation


Doctors at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases found that postoperative factors related to knee stiffness included low motivation. Scarring

Genetic factors, they add, can predispose you to developing joint scar tissue in response to surgery.

Defibrillate







When the heart stops beating, a person goes into sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Heart attacks sometimes lead to SCA, but it can occur independently from a heart attack. SCA results in death if not treated immediately. Anyone who is trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and who can administer defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) can help save a life. Applying an electrical shock to the victim with an AED is the only effective treatment for ventricular fibrillation (VF), which is an abnormal heart rhythm. It should be administered within three to five minutes after the person collapses.


Instructions








1. Make sure you have encountered someone who needs defibrillation. Learn the warning signs of someone who might be in cardiac distress. This includes chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, paleness and sweating.


2. Turn on the AED. A computerized voice prompts the rescuer through the steps of the process.


3. Wipe dry the entire chest area and apply the two electrode pads to the specific sections of the victim's chest that are indicated in the diagram that comes with the unit. Depending on the model of AED, you might need to plug the connector into the machine.


4. Wait while the AED analyzes the victim's heart rhythm. If a shock is needed, the machine automatically charges and instructs the rescuer to stand clear of the victim. Some models automatically produce the shock. Others prompt the rescuer to press the shock button.


5. Begin CPR after the shock has been administered. It might be necessary to follow the CPR cycle with another shock. If the machine indicates that a shock is not advised, the rescuer may need to perform only CPR until professional help arrives.

A punctured lung usually occurs after a person experiences a gunshot, stabbing, fractured rib or ill-fated medical procedure. Use A Circular Polarizer







A circular polarizer reduces unwanted glare.


A circular polarizing filter works by changing the beams of polarized light that enter your camera’s lens when you’re taking a photograph. Polarized light enters the lens directly in certain situations, creating glare or reducing the natural color in a picture. When a circular polarizer is on your lens, you can rotate it back and forth to block the direct beams of polarized light, giving you a better photograph in outdoor lighting shots.


Instructions








1. Choose a circular polarizer by looking at the size of your lens. Lenses run in common sizes, such as 55mm or 52mm, and this number will be on your lens. You will need to obtain the same size when buying the filter.


2. Attach the circular polarizing filter to your lens and head outside on a sunny day. The best way to learn use the filter is to experiment with it. Reflections on water and clouds against a blue sky make two good learning situations.


3. Point your camera towards a reflection in the water and look through the viewfinder. With the hand that you do not use to depress the shutter, slowly turn your circular polarizer 90 degrees. Notice if portions of the shot darken slightly. If there is a lot of bright sun, it may be difficult to witness the change in the viewfinder, so take one shot each of each position to study later when you are indoors.


4. Change your position in relation to the reflection. This is often the most confusing aspect for a new user of a circular polarizer. When you understand that the polarized beams of light are reflecting in a specific direction, due to the angle of the sun, you will begin to see that knowing where to stand to get the shot is the key.


5. Try an easy trick when learning where to stand in relation to the sun’s rays. Hold your hand as if you’re making a pretend gun, with your index finger pointed at the reflection and your thumb held upward at a 45-degree angle from your finger.Walk around until you can rotate your hand, while keeping the same finger alignment, so your thumb points at the sun while your index finger is still pointing at the reflection. From this position, rotate your hand from one side to the other, still pointing at the reflection. The place your thumb points to on either side is optimal for standing when photographing the reflection.


6. Take more practice shots of the reflection from the designated spots and view them indoors to see the difference. Use that technique anytime the sun is shining and you want to reduce reflections with your circular polarizer.

6. Leave the bot fly maggot alone. It will complete its cycle of life and fall out by itself.
